It’s Friday, which can only mean one thing: it’s Day 5 of our 12 Days of Online Marketing Tips blog series! In this set of blog posts, we’ll be providing useful insights into how to make the most of online marketing opportunities – from social media to SEO, it’s all covered.

You’ll find links to our first three days of tips in the Related Links area below this post. In the meantime, take a look at today’s step to success.

Use Instagram’s hashtag functionality to hold photo contests

Unlike a lot of other social media platforms, where competitions are either banned or fall in the grey area, Instagram actively encourages businesses to use prizes as a way to increase brand awareness.

It’s straightforward enough to do: simply ask users to post a photo and include your chosen hashtag in order to enter.

For example, if your company is a fine wines specialist, why not ask your Instagram followers to photograph themselves with a glass of their favourite beverage (one of yours, of course) at the dinner table this Christmas?

Each picture posted will broadcast not only a photo of your product but also its attached hashtag, linking back to an entire feed of free product placement.

Walkers ran a similar campaign earlier this year to promote their new Deep Ridged crisps. For a chance to win an adventure holiday, users were asked to upload an ‘epic’ photo with the caption, “My #TwiceAsEpic entry for @walkers_crisps to win 1 of 10 EPIC adventures with Deep Ridged.”

The best entries were displayed on the brand’s Facebook page:
